Wednesday Sep 25, 2013
Do you know Amy Scruggs? WHAT?! She's a country music star with a fantastic band and a huge heart for Wounded Warriors. What a coincidence, THAT's on of OUR FAVORITE CAUSES!
Amy played today in studio with her band as the prepare for a benefit concert. She's more than a talented country music artist, she has the most beautiful heart, almost as beautiful as she is outside!
A bit about Amy:
Raised in San Dimas California, Amy has been singing since the age of
three. Mother of 4, she finally lived out her dream that has always been rooted
in country music. While in Nashville, Amy caught the attention of many industry
professionals for her powerful vocals and passion for supporting our troops.
Amy was featured in the July 09 issue of Country Weekly Magazine as well as
the Sept 09 cover story for Nashville Music Guide. Her contagious spirit and her
passion resonate to all who hear her. She has overcome tremendous
circumstances and obstacles and now uses that to bring hope and
encouragement through her music. Amy’s Patriotism shines through in her known
traditional version of the National Anthem. In 2011 Amy was chosen to perform
the National Anthem at Dodger Stadium for the 10 year anniversary of 9/11. Amy
performed at Dodger Stadium at the request of the United States Army, Los
Angeles Recruiting Battalion.
Since 2008, Amy has opened for many country music greats including;
Trace Adkins, Clint Black, Charlie Daniels, Little Texas, Hal Katchum, Phil
Vassar, Josh Gracin and others. Amy's single “Coming Home” written by Dave
Adams and produced by Paul McKenna is a celebration song for our heroes.
Amy was officially endorsed by the American Veterans (AMVETS) service
foundation for California from 2009 through 2011. At the beginning of 2010 Amy
decided to set aside touring and dedicate her musical talents completely to the
Veterans and Troops for all her performances. Amy’s oldest son, Ryan Scruggs,
stepped into lead guitar in 2011 and shared the stage and dream with her by
performing alongside her. Ryan is also credited with writing much of their new
music. After years of life changing work behind her, Amy took a break from
touring full time and she reentered the business world. Amy now resides in San
Diego, CA and performs upon request at events honoring our veterans and
heroes, while continuing to appear for speaking engagements. She continues
outreach to the veteran community and women’s and children’s organizations
while enjoying her position as Business Development Manager for New American
Funding of San Diego. Amy continues to use her life experiences as humorous
stories to help encourage people to have a healthy, positive perspective for daily
life and its many challenges

September 4: Skin care, foodies and Bryan teeters on going gluten free
Wednesday Sep 04, 2013
Wednesday Sep 04, 2013
Today's show included Mary Wight from Dr. Bhoyrul (she's the dietitian), Suzanne Mulroy (a health and beauty veteran), Angie and her son Nick Kazmarek who is doing a nutrition food blog for teens. I have a photo.
We talked about cosmetics (specifically for your face and the routines that companies want you to follow). We were first dropping the new sales method of change your skin care routine every three months and that truly in most cases the only difference between a man's product and woman's product is the packaging. Obviously, men don't want a cleanser with a pink rose on it. Even if it works...lol. Bryan uses Lab Series and he loves it. Yours truly uses a combination of Clinique and Mary Kay with a few toes dipped into MAC. Lots of the companies are coming out with multi-lines so they don't lose you with this change your skin care regime every three months as your face and skin becomes accustomed to what you are using and you lose its effectiveness.
We also talked with Mary a lot about hydration and that you have to fill up the inside to look good on the outside. We talked about eating healthy diet and how it doesn't have to be hard or require signing up for some formulated regime. Eat plain, clean food.
Angie's son is writing a food blog because he was sensitive to many foods like Bryan, even though Bryan's habits aren't where they should be - YET. We will be talking more about that in the upcoming weeks as well. There is a test you take that tells you everything your body is allergic to. Bryan's test came back with everything except watermelon! I'm serious. He just can't pull the trigger to go all the way Gluten Free but is trying.

August 28: Human Rights in San Diego, Big Mike Phillips, Harvey Milk American Diner
Wednesday Aug 28, 2013
Wednesday Aug 28, 2013
This was an INTERESTING show covering some big celebs – alive and dead. It is the 50th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s, “I have a dream” speech. We focused on human rights. We could have spent the time focusing on how far we have to go, but we decided to celebrate by talking to some local human rights activists and bigger than life humans.
Listen to our show as we talk with Big Mike Phillips and Frank Lechner about the new Harvey Milk’s American Diner replacing the iconic City Delicatessen & Bakery.
We also visited with community activist Nicole Murray Ramirez who always sparks passionate feelings – positive and negative. He’s been around publicly since the 1960′s and is hated and loved by many. There is no middle of the road with Mr. Ramirez!
He’s a friend of this show’s host and has done many wonderful and generous acts in our community.
About Big Mike: A Big Man, with a bigger heart!
Known around town for his big smile and unwavering community goodwill, “Big Mike” Phillips is a man who wears many hats as an established, enthusiastic fund-raiser, popular bartender, government LGBT adviser, co-founder and board member of several nonprofit organizations.
“Big Mike” not only pours a mean drink or two as a well-known bartender at Jimmy Carter’s Mexican Café, but also spends much of his time raising funds to benefit the community. Phillips initially moved to San Diego in 1989 to spend time with his best friend, Tino, who was succumbing to AIDS.
“When I got out here, I noticed that he wasn’t well at all,” Phillips recalls. “So I went back home the following Saturday and sold everything, packed my bags and moved out here. I wanted to be here with him, because I knew he wasn’t going to be around for very much longer.”
His friend died three months later.
“While I was here, he made me promise to give San Diego at least one year’s chance,” Phillips says. “No matter how good or bad it was. So I promised him, and that promise has lasted all these years.”
About Harvey Milk’s American Diner in San Diego (on Facebook)
In an update regarding the upcoming Harvey Milk’s American Diner, which will replace the iconic City Delicatessen & Bakery, co-partner Mike “Big Mike” Phillips said the transition will occur “as soon as possible, hopefully early summer.” Phillips has joined forces with restaurateur Tom Brown and media-marketing consultant Frank Lechner to open what is considered the first-of-its-kind eatery honoring the civil rights achievements of the LGBT activist. The venture has received licensing support from The Harvey Milk Foundation and human rights activist Stuart Milk, who is the nephew of the late Harvey Milk.
“We’re stepping into a restaurant that has given so much to our community for the past 30 years,” Phillips said. “We literally have some big shoes to fill.”
The restaurant will operate as City Deli until the transition is complete. 525 University Ave., 619-295-2747.

This was a full house show. We focused on the Wounded Warrior Program and had Mia Roseberry and Patrick Clark from REIG. They are providing an amazing service for an unfilled need for Veterans and have opened their first house locally (disabled, it is outrageous what they have to do in terms of waiting to get a disability rating etc. and there are six months in between them being discharged and getting benefits...sometimes it can lag up to 2 years).

August 14: Dollar Shave Club and Remembering to Ask About Parking
Thursday Aug 15, 2013
Thursday Aug 15, 2013
Yesterday we had the CEO and founder of Dollar Shave Club Michael Dublin. Bryan and Angie discussed a bunch of different things - BIG SURPRISE - good grief, those two change topics so fast it would have made your head spin. A lot of it had to do with loyalty, reconnecting with folks you care about most and they also discussed the San Francisco market and an old friend, Jon Giacomi.
Hey, back to the Dollar Shave Club and CEO Michael Dubin:

August 7: Bark Box Helps Animals in Need while we talk Real Estate
Monday Aug 12, 2013
Monday Aug 12, 2013
Bryan and Angie are having CEO and Co-Founder of Barkbox. Matt Meeker. It’s a cool concept and we all use it for our dogs. It’s really taken off. We think this is one of the greatest new concepts out there for your pets. Listen to the replay and you will get the inside scoop on many things that are of interest including some of the stuff you are feeding your pet now although branded "premium" may not be so "premium" after all.
A portion of proceeds from each box will go to help doggies-in-need. Whether you’ve known your furry friend for years or have a new special canine in your life, BarkBox is the monthly necessity for keeping your pup entertained and feeling well loved.
We are also joined by Leslie Pierce from Lawyers Title and David Rudd from Kindred Real Estate.
David is a long time friend of Bryan’s, as is Leslie. We will probably discuss some general real estate items as well as fun about being a dog lover.

July 31:Carnies are business owners.
Wednesday Jul 31, 2013
Wednesday Jul 31, 2013
Sally Crawford joins us this week. Sally's new project involves carnies and a reality show. She and her husband, Richard, are producers of commercials, reality shows, documented stories. But what we learned is that she was actually a carnie in her prior career. She and her family traveled the circuit for seven years with her children. Again, time to break the stereotype. The definition - no animals unless it's a petting zoo or pony ride. No animal abuse. They travel mostly to small towns. The carnival is a big deal for farmers to show their animals, crops and kids to compete in the shows and expos. It's a big deal for these towns to get professional acts to come and perform. Richard and Sally took a "panning for gold" stand on the road. It was a huge hit! They had several games to keep it interesting. They lived in a motorhome, trailer, truck conversion. This led to the first traveling laser light show in Canada. They netted over $250,000 from this - they created a corporation, had partners. It was a true business started from scratch. Before you could get away without reporting cash in the 70s. There were no computers to keep track of it. Now everyone pays their share because documentation is easier electronically. Perfect timing for this topic as Bryan has a delightful meeting set with the IRS tomorrow, aka AN AUDIT. Scary or annoying? or BOTH? Back to the new reality show. Through their connections, the unlikely friends and adopted family they made you can learn a new aspect and stories behind the carnivals we come to associate with those who are "less than." Those "less thans" became their adopted family, helped them care for their children while they were working. Try to think of them this way, carnival workers are BUSINESS OWNERS who TRAVEL - a lot. These are entrepreneurs. AND they took a lot of blame by those in some of the towns for crimes committed by the locals. Easier to use them as scapegoat. Listen to learn more.

July 24: Dr. Cameron Wilson with Prostate Cancer Survivor, Tim Garlin
Wednesday Jul 24, 2013
Wednesday Jul 24, 2013
Many men think they are too young to get prostate cancer. Think again. Early detection is the key to survival. The age barriers no longer exist as they used to with this. The percentage of men diagnosed has gone up, but part of that is due to early detection and regular screenings. Tim Garlin is a young man, he has survived, but you should hear his story. You will be able to relate. Dr. Cameron Wilson is Tim’s doctor. He’ll be on to answer questions, give advice and debunk myths about prostate cancer. About Dr. Cameron Wilson: We have his clinical biography, which is impressive, but we wanted to know more. I’m sure Bryan will be talking about the car racing during the show, and Dr. Wilson’s passion for men’s health. “I am married (since 07/2005) with 2 young children. I met my wife in college here in San Diego. I chose medicine as a career after volunteering at UCSD medical center. (My) interests include mostly spending time with my family but also a little car racing, gardening and enjoying my wife’s cooking!”

July 17: Hilarity with the usual suspects and Real Estate discussion
Tuesday Jul 23, 2013
Tuesday Jul 23, 2013
Last week it was Angie, Bryan, Pat and Wes. What started out as a real estate update show ended up being a pretty hilarious coffee clutch. Too many topics to cover – quick and upbeat – don’t miss it! Patrick Clark of RGI Asset Management - housing market discussion. Bryan says he can talk to you about your house to come up with the price to get you to your goal - either a fast sale or top dollar - and sometimes both! Brian Daly and Patrick Clark have founded their company on principal, rather than greed. Yes, we all want to make money, but it can be done ethically, fairly and with compassion. Housing Bubble: Bryan referenced KeepingCurrentMatters.com on this topic. Bryan and Patrick agree that we are heading to a bubble that could level out or even implode a bit. Interest rates are following the same sticker shock that gas prices do: raise them up and then back them down a bit so people feel that it's better - false comfort. Then insure 90% of the loans - Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac. Would be much better if more private money were a part of these loans rather than putting so much in the Federal Government to keep the Real Estate Market going. Keeping Current Matters states that 40% of buyers are getting better rate than renting. There are plenty of traditional buyers out there - don't panic. If you need help with short sale, call Bryan now - before the Feds change their generosity. Bryan talked about being the fat guy on the plane. He would fly first class or not at all. He knows how people were hoping, "Please pass, pass, pass, don't let the fat guy sit by me in the middle and ooze into my seat!" He feels the same about kids - there's always that potential of the ears popping causing a shrill alarm at takeoff and landing. He calls himself out and we were laughing pretty hard - if we were honest! Preview to next week's show: What is the right age to get a test for your prostate? How about that colon? We'll be talking to expert and his patient survivor next week. Read more, then tune in!
